Full Version: libwebcam 0.1 for Linux

Dear Linux users,

The first release of the Webcam Library libwebcam is designed to simplify certain aspects of webcam application development on Linux with a focus on the dynamic controls (UVC extension unit controls) of the Linux UVC driver.

Along with libwebcam comes a front-end tool called uvcdynctrl that allows to process control mappings stored in an XML file and pass them to the UVC driver. A good example (and this is the sample XML file that comes with the release) are the pan/tilt controls for the Logitech QuickCam Orbit/Sphere cameras.

Please note that this is an alpha release. In particular the documentation of the XML format is still somewhat incomplete, but the README files contain some additional information and the complete API documentation is already available.

There is also a new discussion forum for everything related to libwebcam. Please feel free to post your feedback, bug reports, and feature requests.

We are planning a second release for next week that includes more documentation, a list of missing/planned features, and the launch of a website that gives a better overview of the entire dynamic control mechanism. So, enjoy the preview and stay tuned!

Cheers,
Martin
Thank you for supporting Linux. This is huge. Smile

I bought a QuickCam 9000 Pro and I'm very happy to see that support will expand on Linux. I do not use Windows anymore so I'll take all the support I can get.

I think we're off to a good start, yes. :-)

By the way, we're always looking for people who are interested in helping us in one way or another (testing, development, maintaining information, etc.), so in case you have some motivation and spare time, don't be afraid to speak up. ;-)

Cheers,
Martin
